Faith and Knowledge

  • Auguste Compte: "man can live without God, but he cannot live without religion" (14)

Faith and Existence

  • Faith cannot be represented abstractly, but only viewed through the lives of the saints (36)

  • We need a future beyond death but we also can’t bear the thought: we need Christ’s forgiveness (59)
  • This leaves us with a description of Faith: "It is not a system of semi-knowledge, but an existential decision—it is life in terms of the future that God grants us, even beyond the frontier of death. This is the attitude and orientation that gives life its weights and measures, its ordinances, and its very freedom. Certainly a life lived by faith resembles more an expedition up a mountain than a quiet evening spent reading in front of the fire; but anyone who embarks upon this expedition knows and experiences more and more that the adventure to which it invites us is worthwhile." (60)

Faith and Philosophy

  • The challenge for faith is that “philosophy no longer exists—only philosophies” (62)

  • "There is no longer a common philosophical certainty, unless it be the certainty, shared by all modern philosophies, that there is no certainty beyond the sphere of the exact sciences (73, c.f. 2020-11-18-After Virtue)
  • The distraction of modern philosophy as a symptom of the attempt to be exact like the physical sciences (75)

The Future of the World Through the Hope of Men

What Will the Future Church Look Like?

  • Forecasting: "What Saint Augustine said is still true: may is an abyss; what will rise out of these depths no one can see in advance." (102)
  • Learn from history: "It is precisely in times of vehement historical upheaval, when all the past seems to dissolve and completely new things seem to emerge, that men need to reflect upon history, which enables them to see the unreal exaggeration of the moment in the right perspective and integrates them again into a happening that never repeats itself but, on the other hand ,never loses its unity and its context." (103)
  • Forecasting: "Looking back into the past does not yield a prediction of the future, but limits our illusion of complete uniqueness and shows us that while exactly the same did not happen before, something very similar did." (103)
  • "The Enlightenment as a historical epoch does not enjoy a very high reputation today...and the Enlightenment is astonishingly like the present day." (104-105)
  • You won't win by following the whims of the world, as the French Revolution illustrates: story of Archbishop Gobel of Paris who denounced his faith and priesthood, participated in the worship of Reason at Notre Dame, but was then executed as an atheist under Robespierre (108)
  • Johann Michael Sailer: "he did not confine man within the present moment but knew that if he is to become fully aware of himself, he must open his eyes reverently to the whole riches of his history." (109-111)
  • "Only he who gives himself creates the future. The man who simply tries to instruct, who wants to change others, remains unfruitful." (112)
